Windows 11 (Build 25206) is now on the Insider Program Dev Channel

After another week's delay, we're bringing you a new build available on the Dev channel. This time we're moving from build 25201 to build 25206. There aren't many new features, but there are a few bug fixes. Let's see what the Windows Insider team has done.

    What's New in Windows 11 Build 25206

Changed behavior of SMB authentication limiter

The SMB Authentication Rate Limiter in Insider Preview builds added an additional protection mechanism to the SMB Server service. Implement a delay for each failed NTLM authentication. This means Previously, if an attacker sent 300 brute force attempts per second from a client for 5 minutes (90,000 passwords), the same number of attempts would take at least 50 hours. The goal here is to make Windows clients an unattractive target for local accounts in a workgroup or when joining a domain. The SMB server runs by default on all versions of Windows, but is not accessible by default unless you intentionally open the firewall or create a client SMB share that opens the firewall.

when building 25206which is enabled by default and set to 2000ms (2 seconds). Wrong username or password sent to SMB Now defaults to a 2 second delay On all Windows Insider editions. When first released to Windows Insiders, this protection mechanism was turned off by default. This change in behavior was not made for Windows Server Insiders. The default remains 0.
